Fall is a beautiful season in Montana. Changing colors, frosty mornings and snow dusted peaks are noticeable clues that winter is just around the corner. As we scramble to get in the last summer activities of the season, it’s important to look forward to the winter ahead. Since fall is a notorious time for delivering strong winter storms, now is a great time to start getting prepared.
Changing the batteries in your transceiver is always a good idea. Batteries can wear out over the summer and corrosion can build up in the battery case. Making sure both the batteries and connection are fresh and clean is necessary to ensure your transceiver is working properly. Other pieces of equipment to check before heading into the backcountry include your shovel and probe. It’s surprising how easily the closet monster can damage these seemingly durable pieces of equipment. It only takes a few minutes to put these items together to make sure they are functioning properly.
Another worthwhile activity in preparing for the winter ahead is taking an avalanche education class. We are adding classes to our calendar almost daily. Check out our Education Calendar for an updated list of classes being taught around southwest Montana.
